A. Paul Nestor
Mr.
Nestor joined the University of Kentucky in 1952 as Director of
Purchasing and held this position for eight years. He then became
the University Business Office representative in the Medical Center
for five years, after which he returned to main campus as Director
of Campus Services. This included responsibility for the University
Motor Pool (later folded into the Agriculture Motor Pool) and
the Communications Services Department (then consisting only of
the telephone system, and later transferred under Gene Williams).
Other units for which he was responsible included the Duplicating
Services, Photographic Services, Postal Services and Printing
Services Departments.
When NACUBO (National Association of College and University Business
Officers) began its award programs for outstanding campus projects,
the University of Kentucky was fortunate to receive several awards.
Of the first four awards received, three were given to units under
Mr. Nestor's supervision. The Postal Services Department received
an award of $1000.00 for a program to self-insure all outgoing
packages for which the various University departments desired
insurance. The departments were charge the usual insurance fee,
which was placed into a special account for paying any insurance
claims. The expected savings from this program was estimated to
be about $4700.00 per year. The SPEEDSORT was developed during
this period which used the campus building numbers as the 4-digit
add-on to the USPS Zip Code, and which assisted greatly in the
process of sorting the mail.
The NACUBO award of $1000.00 became
the basis for funding the Nestor Award for Employee Creativity,
which was established by the Board of Trustees in 1984 when Mr.
Nestor retired.
Mr. Nestor was participant in the College Business Management
Institute (CBMI) for 49 of its first 50 years: as a student, as
instructor for the purchasing course for eight years, as coordinator
for 22 years, and as a member of the Hospitality Committee until
he moved to North Carolina.
He also represented the University of Kentucky as the President
of the National Association of Educational Buyers (NAEB).
