Center for Academic Resources & Enrichment Services (CARES)

UK students

CARES provides a comprehensive academic support system as well as enrichment services to aid in increasing the retention and graduation rates of underrepresented students. Programs and activities assist students in achieving academic excellence and adjusting to student life at the University of Kentucky.

Freshman Programs/Activities

Freshman Summer Program

FSP is a six-week academically intensive program designed to improve the retention of students admitted to the University of Kentucky. FSP provides participants the opportunity to earn up to six hours of college credit, learn to navigate campus, and become familiar with classroom/university expectations. Students also participate in social and cultural activities.

Critical First Year Program

The Critical First Year Program is an academic support program designed to assist first-year students in making a successful transition from high school to college. The goal of the program is for students to earn at least a 3.0 grade point average at the end of their freshman year. The following are components of the program:

  • Multicultural First Year Focus Orientation
  • First Year Focus Seminars
  • Academic Progress Sessions
  • Study Groups
  • Tutoring
  • Professor Letters
  • Peer Mentoring

Science Living Learning Community

The Science Living Learning Community is targeted to students interested in pursing a math or science major. The program uses a collaborative learning model to aid in student comprehension and mastery of the selected subject. Participants live together in Kirwan III and enroll in University Orientation (UK 101), General Chemistry courses (CHE 105 and 107), and Chemistry Excel Workshops (CHE 195, held in their residence hall).

Math Living Learning Community

The Math Living Learning Community focuses on providing academic support for Math 108 and 109 as well as providing strategies and information to help the students make a smoother transition to college life.

William C. Parker Scholars Retention Program

Scholarship recipients are expected to meet the following requirements:

  • Enroll in and successfully complete UK 101
  • Participate in study groups and/or monitored study
  • Attend Academic Progress Sessions with the freshman counselor
  • Participate in workshops focused on issues of concern to first year students

Sophomore Programs/Activities

Academic Progress Sessions

Students are required to meet with the sophomore counselor at least three times during each semester. Information regarding class progress, grades, time management, study skills, test taking strategies, personal/social issues, referrals and other topics relating to being a successful student are discussed.

Tutoring

For extra help in a class, CARES provides individual tutoring, a study group facilitator, or information about tutoring offered by other departments.

Project C.S.I.: Co-oping, Shadowing and Interning

Project C.S.I. is a career oriented program for sophomores and juniors that focuses on providing opportunities for students to gain first hand knowledge and experience in their career interest areas. Through workshops, seminars and communication with the counselor, students learn about various occupations, as well as, co-op, shadowing and internship opportunities. Students will also learn about research, study abroad opportunities and the National Student Exchange program.

This point-based incentive program allows students an opportunity to win prizes based on points earned through participation in program activities.

Scholarship recipients are expected to meet the following requirements:

  • Attend Academic Progress Sessions with the Sophomore Counselor
  • Participate in Project C.S.I.: Co-oping, Shadowing and Interning Activities

Junior and Senior Programs/Activities

Academic Progress Sessions

Students are required to meet with the junior/senior counselor each semester. Juniors must meet 3 times and seniors 1 or 2 times based on their cumulative GPA (3.0 or higher, meets 1 time and 2.9 or lower meets 2 times). Information regarding class progress, grades, time management, study skills, test taking strategies, personal/social issues, referrals and other topics relating to being a successful student are discussed.

Tutoring

For extra help in a class, CARES provides individual tutoring, a study group facilitator, or information about tutoring offered by other departments.

Seniors

SOAR focuses on professional and leadership development that enhances the career preparedness for seniors entering the job market or attending graduate or professional school. Program components include: Senior Leadership Series, Spotlight Jobs, Graduate Exam Preparation Workshops, Academic Planning, and the Senior Newsflash newsletter.
