The Office of Student Diversity Engagement

UK students

Student Diversity Engagement [SDE] programs and services prepare students for leaderships roles by highlighting and enhancing the appreciation for the critical role that diversity and multiculturalism play in the contemporary world. SDE engages students in the refinement of ongoing conversations as well as the development of novel approaches to address the importance of diversity as relates to age, class, ethnicity, gender, job status, language, nationality, physical abilities and race.

Throughout the year, the Office of Student Diversity Engagement seeks to advance the appreciation for diversity and multiculturalism through a variety  of ways:

Diversity Dialogue Series

This series of discussions is designed to promote scholarship and debate around the topics of race, ethnicity and diversity as a whole.  With the intent of expanding the study of race and ethnicity beyond the conventional black/white paradigm, these discussions also enlist the support and participation of community groups and activists.

Collaboration with Campus Greek Organizations

Through this initiative, SDE will lead and manage efforts to prevail over obstacles to cooperation and communication based on cultural difference and uneasiness. SDE will  facilitate dialogues, promote collaborative programs and coordinate service projects in which historically African American and predominately white Greek Organizations will come together to achieve common goals.

Collaboration with Residence Life

SDE will coordinate and facilitate the annual Train The Trainer Workshop for UK hall directors and resident advisors on leadership management and cultural competency.

Collaboration with the Robinson Scholars Program

SDE will develop and cultural competence component for the Robinson Scholars Program. SDE will also coordinate and facilitate diversity and leadership training for the scholars.

Collaboration with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Cultural Center

Through a close working relationship with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Cultural Center, the SDE will promote the mission of that center to all multicultural student organizations.  SDE will also collaborate and work with the MLKCC in its coordination of the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Vigil on the UK campus.

Collaboration with the Office of International Affairs

SDE co-facilitates the annual two-day international retreat which is designed as a dialogue between international students and domestic students.  SDE also serves on the Internationalization Task Force Advisory Committee and its Student Affairs Sub-Committee. SDE also co-sponsors and designs AFRICA WEEK and LATINO WEEK on campus.

Engagement in UK Committees and Taskforces

SDE additionally serves as Chair of the WE ARE UK campus-wide cultural festival held during UK Welcome Week.  The director is also Co-Chair of the Cultural Festival Month, a member of the Internationalization Task Force and serves as faculty in the Trainer-Leadership Summit.
