Which Dean is the Responsible Dean?
The rules distinguish between the dean of the student's college and the responsible dean.
- The dean of the student's college is normally just that. However, there are two exceptions.
- If a student is enrolled in a program or curriculum of the Graduate School, then the dean of the Graduate School assumes the role of the dean of the student's college.
- If the student is not enrolled in a college, the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education assumes the role of the dean of the student's college.
- The responsible dean depends on the the nature of the offense and where it was committed.
- If a student is suspected of committing an academic offense in a course:
- If the student is enrolled in a graduate program or curriculum, and the course is numbered 400G through 799, the dean of the Graduate School is the responsible dean.
- If the student is enrolled in a program or curriculum governed by an honor code, the dean of the student's college is also the responsible dean.
- Otherwise, the dean of the college that offers the course (as determined by the course's prefix) is the responsible dean, even if the course is offered through University Extension. In this case, the dean of the student's college receives notice of penalties but is not otherwise involved.
- If a student is suspected of committing an academic offense either in a class in which the student is not registered, or in academic work outside of a course, then the dean of the student's college is also the responsible dean.
