Kentucky Museum of Natural History

A Project

The Big Leaf Magnolia, Magnolia macrophylla Michx., has the largest flower of any tree in the native North American silva. It occurs with three other species in southeastern Kentucky.

Did you know that some Kentucky lakes have freshwater jellyfish? Most people think of jellyfish (Phyllum Cnidaria) as inhabiting only marine environments. I have captured (and released) the nickel- to quarter-size Craspeda custea sowerbii jellyfish in Wood Creek Lake and Laurel Lake in southeastern Kentucky. How did they get in the lakes? This jellyfish is an indicator of exceptionally pure water. Are the jellyfish found in other waters of Kentucky?
