|
Recipient: Madison Southern High School Watershed: Muddy Creek of Kentucky River Date Grant Activities Began : Wooden posts to erect signs at monitoring locations were donated by Blue Grass Army Depot in September, 2005. Accomplishments to Date : Draft of signs to be posted on Muddy Creek was prepared in November, 2005. A vendor to produce the signs (Sign Source, Richmond , KY ) was located and 20 signs were produced and received on January 2, 2006 . Hip boots and hip boot holders were ordered from Forestry Suppliers in April, 2006. Ten pairs of boots were purchased. The boots are being utilized for: 1) erecting "Muddy Creek Water Quality Monitoring Site" signs along the roadways; 2) use by students to conduct water quality monitoring and 3) to place wood duck nest structures along Muddy Creek. Adherence to Budget : Project remains in line with budget. Production of signs of high quality was at a higher cost than expected. Twenty (20) "Muddy Creek Water Quality Monitoring Site" signs cost $499. The higher quality signs are expected to last longer and with the donation of posts and some of the sign mounting materials will offset the added cost of signs. The purchase of 10 pairs of hip boots and boot holders and hardware to mount the Muddy Creek signs utilized the remaining portion of the grant funds. Target Completion Date : Hip boots and the Muddy Creek signs were purchased. Signs have been placed on the Blue Grass Army Depot at monitoring sites along Muddy Creek and its tributaries. Signs have been placed at Muddy Creek crossings along various state highways in Madison County . The boots holders will be mounted and the boots stored in the "Watershed Education Trailer" for use by various school groups conducting stream studies. Madison Southern High School students will complete erecting signs at sampling locations along county roads on Muddy Creek this fall. These students will also monitor the signs and replace them as needed. Photos: The photos show Muddy Creek signs at two locations in Madison County . The signs are aluminum highway quality signs with reflective lettering. They measure 12" by 18".
