KRA Grant Projects

Boyle County High School

Boyle County students participate in the Clarks Run grant project.

Focus Watershed: Clarks Run of Dix River

A local teacher applied for funding assistance to develop and install educational signs along a recreational trail that follows Clarks Run through downtown Danville. These signs will help educate local students and community residents about watershed concepts and human impacts to water quality. It is hoped that community awareness of nonpoint source contributors to pollution can lead to changes in personal behavior that will improve overall water quality in this impaired stream. In addition to funding for the educational signage, Boyle County students received KRA grant money to conduct monthly Water Watch sampling along Clarks Run. Sampling will address three different aspects of water quality:

  • Biological - collecting sample organisms to determine diversity and overall water quality
  • Physical - depth, width, velocity, temperature and flow capacity
  • Chemical - dissolved oxygen, pH and conductivity

Sampling results will be presented to local agencies and reported to the KRA. In addition, the student samplers will conduct a field trip at the conclusion of the sampling year to visit sites along Clarks Run as it flows through agricultural, industrial and urban areas to its mouth at Dix River.
