See the 2006-07 Friends of Cane Run Grant Final Report Focus Watershed: Cane Run of North Elkhorn Creek Cane Run is a tributary of North Elkhorn Creek and is located in northern Fayette County and southern Scott County. It is listed on the 2004 Kentucky 303(d) list of impaired streams for both swimming (nonsupport) and aquatic life (nonsupporting). Pollutant causes of these impairments include pathogens, nutrients, siltation and organic enrichment. The suspected pollutant sources are thought to include municipal point sources, urban runoff and storm sewers, agriculture, land disposal, construction and hydromodification. This grant project is designed to encourage action by residents and businesses to improve water quality and aquatic habitat throughout the Cane Run watershed. These actions will complement the recommendations included in the TMDLs being developed for the Cane Run watershed, as well as the Lexington-Fayette County Urban Government’s stormwater management program and Georgetown’s source water protection plan. Specifically, the project components are the establishment of a Watershed Council for Cane Run; sponsorship of four Community Roundtables on relevant water resource issues; setup of a website; creation of watershed display materials; and two Watershed Council-sponsored field days.
