Focus Watershed: South Elkhorn Creek of Elkhorn Creek

The South Elkhorn Creek watershed is heavily impacted by agricultural, suburban and urban land uses. It has been designated as a priority by the Kentucky Division of Water, the Kentucky Water Resources Research Institute, and the Kentucky River Authority due to its water quality impairments. The Fayette County Conservation District will provide day-long training for at least 20 Fayette County teachers in order to better inform them about the South Elkhorn Creek watershed and related water quality impacts. Specifically, course content will include information about the watershed concept, water quality indicators, collection of water quality data, pollution sources and problems, practices that can reduce pollution, and additional watershed education resources. This training course will give the teachers the knowledge and materials needed to educate their students and encourage their participation in water quality monitoring and practices that will reduce water pollution.
