Focus Watershed: Town Branch of South Elkhorn Creek

Town Branch is a tributary of South Elkhorn Creek and is located in Fayette County.  In 2004, it was included on the state’s 303(d) list of impaired streams for pollution by nutrients, organic enrichment/low dissolved oxygen and pathogens.  The stream receives significant, concentrated urban stormwater runoff and suffers from sanitary sewer overflows in heavy rain events.  Its receiving waters of Elkhorn Creek serve as a popular fishing and recreational resource for the area, furthering the importance of improving the water quality status of Town Branch.

As a way of drawing people to Town Branch and educating them about its importance, Town Branch Trail is developing an 8-mile greenway trail along the creek.  The organization will use these grant funds to fabricate and install two environmental education signs along the trail.
