Focus Watershed: Wolf Run of Town Branch of South Elkhorn Creek

The Friends of Wolf Run is working toward the overall goal of lessening stormwater-based pollution of the stream through education of watershed residents and businesses on individual actions that limit pollution. This group is forming a local steering committee, conducting stream walks to identify areas needing better management, sending informational mailings to watershed residents, and developing a website to education residents. They plan to work with existing neighborhood associations to generate participation.

Wolf Run is listed by the Kentucky Division of Water as being impaired for swimming due to pathogen pollution. Suspected sources included urban runoff and storm sewers. A TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) plan to reduce pathogens in Wolf Run (as well as the broader South Elkhorn Creek watershed) is currently under development. Wolf Run is also cited for only partially supporting aquatic life due to nutrient pollution and habitat alteration. Stream channelization is believed to be the source of these impairments.
