Session Descriptions: Concurrent Session A All sessions 9:10 am - 10:00 am 9:10 - 10:00 The application and interview process can sometimes be just as intense as a hiring official as it is for an applicant. Learn how to think like a hiring official when you apply for a position by joining us for this resume role-play session that will put you in the hiring driver’s seat, reading through applications and resumes and deciding who to call for an interview and who to put at the bottom of the pile. A4: The Salary Conversation at UK 9:10 - 10:00 Join Gatton School negotiation expert Dr. Joe LaBianca and HR Assistant Manager Sarah Bowes for a behind the scenes look at how salary quotes are determined and how to make the most out of the opportunity to negotiate for important non-monetary compensation like flexible work arrangements and scheduling preferences. During this workshop, we will discuss areas in which it seems that women differ in their approach to leadership and explore ways to lead successfully and authentically. Are you spinning your wheels and going nowhere? Getting from your current destination to that new job you’re longing for can be a long and discouraging journey when you’re on the road alone. Join in this lively session with other UK employees to recharge, regroup and learn strategies to get your job search in high gear. Participants in this session will examine the four stages of every job opening, map out the ‘hidden job market,’ avoid the most common mistakes job hunters make, and share tips on improving their application, resume and correspondence necessary for landing a great new job! Presenter (bio): Diane Kohler, Career Program Development 10:10 - 11:00 If you’ve heard of speed dating - dozens of people looking for the right match, cycling through six-minute conversations to quickly sort out prospective future romantic interests from potential romantic dudes – you’re on the right track. Now think rather than meeting a potential future spouse, you’re meeting future potential mentors and protégées, allies and sources of information to help you make the most of your career at the University. The workshop will focus on preparing you for retirement that includes your personal savings, your employer plan and social security and the importance of these areas. Sue Badenhop, Ph.D., Extension Specialist for Financial Management and Household Equipment in the College of Agriculture will present and Joey Payne, Director Employee Benefits & Self-Funded Plans, will be on hand to address questions specific to UK’s retirement plan. C5: Personal Savings and Budgeting 1:30 - 2:20 The workshop will cover setting priorities for saving money for the future including retirement, and for emergencies, as well as tips on how budgeting and a prioritized spending plan help with saving money. There will be handouts to assist participants with setting goals and keeping records. Presenter (bio): Jennifer Klee, Family & Consumer Sciences Concurrent Session D 2:30 pm - 3:20 pm D1:Every Day Success on the Job 2:30 - 3:20 Success in your current position can lead to future advancement. This session will help pinpoint individual strengths and weaknesses and provide ways to improve in your current position. Tips from Julie Morgenstern’s book “Never Check Email in the Morning,” including ways to achieve work-life balance, create a task list, organize with change and leverage your value will be discussed. Whether you want to increase your productivity in your current job or gain tips to master a new job, this session will provide an overview to every day success on the job.
