Sarah Bennett Holmes, a distinguished former Dean of Women at the University of Kentucky, championed the rights of women and inspired young women to persevere in the face of hardship and to pursue their educational and career goals.  Fifteen years ago, the University of Kentucky Women’s Forum Board established the Sarah Bennett Holmes Award.

The Sarah Bennett Holmes Award is granted annually to women working at the University who promote the growth and well-being of other women at UK and across the Commonwealth.  These awards bring recognition for efforts that would otherwise go unnoticed through typical channels. 

Two awards will be granted

One female staff member

One female faculty member

Each recipient receives $1,000.00 and is announced at a ceremony presented during a luncheon for all the nominees.  The 2008 Sarah Bennett Holmes Awards Luncheon will be held on April 29th, as part of the inaugural UK Women’s Forum Conference, “Climbing the UK Ladder:  Tips for Women’s”. 

Any woman (regular staff or faculty) currently employed by the University of Kentucky is eligible for nomination.  The recipient must be a UK employee on April 29, 2008, the date of the ceremony.

*Although Sarah Bennett Holmes award winners from previous years are not eligible, women nominated previously may be re-nominated for this year’s award.  Self-nominations not accepted.

History of the Sarah Bennett Holmes Award

Sarah Bennett Holmes Award. Holmes, a distinguished former Dean of Women at the University of Kentucky, tirelessly championed the rights of women throughout her career. Widowed at a young age, Holmes raised four children while completing her own education. She then began a successful career at the University of Kentucky where she inspired young women to persevere in the face of hardship and pursue their career goals. Among her accomplishments, Holmes developed work programs for women during the depression.

In her honor, the UK Women's Forum created the Sarah Bennett Holmes Award. This award is granted annually to women working at the University who promote the growth and well-being of other women at UK and across the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The award brings recognition for those efforts that would otherwise go unnoticed through normal channels. The award nominees will be recognized at the Sarah Bennett Holmes Award Luncheon on April 29, 2008. The two winners, one faculty member and one staff member, each received a $1000 award. Any woman (staff or faculty) currently employed by the University of Kentucky (full-time regular) is eligible for nomination.

The UK Women's Forum is an organization for all employees of the University faculty and staff. Its mission is to exert a leadership role in empowering, validating, informing, including and celebrating all women employed at the University of Kentucky by addressing challenges, communicating issues and recognizing successes within the context of the workplace.
