From Your Editor ...

Dr. Debra Aaron, National Editor

All of the officers of the National Block and Bridle Club hope your summer has gone well and that you are eagerly anticipating the beginning of another school year.  We also hope you are making plans to join us at the 90th National Block and Bridle Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, November 12-14, 2009.  Many thanks go to the University of Kentucky Block and Bridle Club for hosting the convention.  It is being held in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition, "The World's Largest Purebred Livestock Show."

Now a word from our convention hosts ... Kentucky is known for two things-horses and bourbon.  People come from all around to experience these two traditions of the Bluegrass.  All attendees at the 90th National Block and Bridle Convention will be able to see horses grazing on the rolling hills of Bluegrass pastures and learn about the distiller's art at one of the many historic distilleries in Central Kentucky.  Depending on your tour choice, you will also have the opportunity to visit Churchill Downs, the home of the Kentucky Derby, Keeneland, one of the  most beautiful race tracks in the country, Alltech, Inc., one of the leading animal health companies in the world and the sponsor of the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games, Finchville Farms, where they've been curing country hams (another Kentucky tradition) in the same way for over three generations, or the University of Kentucky Animal Research Center, a state-of-the-art beef, sheep, and swine research/teaching facility.  One tour will take attendees to Bowling Green, the "home of the corvette," to learn about Kentucky horsepower of a different kind.  Last, but not least, most attendees will have the opportunity to see some of the 1.1 million beef cows that call Kentucky home.  After all, Kentucky is the largest cattle-producing state east of the Mississippi River.

In addition to great tours and the North American Championship Rodeo, we have lined up speakers who share our passion for animal agriculture and who are sure to inspire and motivate you.  No Block and Bridle Convention would be complete without dances and we have DJ's and a live band ready to go!  Finally, you will have some free time to take in an afternoon of racing at Churchill Downs, experience the North American (spend some money at the giant Country Store with its 150 commercial vendors or watch some of the ten different livestock species compete for top prize money), or maybe visit the Louisville Slugger Museum and the Mohammad Ali Center in downtown Louisville.  We think you'll find the 90th National Block and Bridle Convention has something for everyone!  See you in Kentucky!

Convention Co-Chairs
