Chester Grundy
A native of Louisville and a 1969 graduate of the University of Kentucky, Chester S. Grundy, has been an administrator with UK for more than 30 years, serving as director of the Office of African American Student Affairs and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Cultural Center. He and his wife pioneered an annual College Tour where they take African-American students on a weeklong bus tour of historically Black colleges in the South, including tours of key African-American historical sites. His love for jazz music led him to the creation of the nationally known Spotlight Jazz Series, which is the longest running on-campus jazz series on any college campus in the United States. He was an original founder of Lexington’s Roots and Heritage Festival, which is celebrating its 19th year. He is the co-coordinator of Lexington’s original Martin Luther King Jr. birthday march and program, which has also become an annual event held at downtown Heritage Hall. He has not only committed to the creation of curricular programming that gives voice to non-majority cultures but also the presentation of those cultural expressions to the widest and most diverse audiences possible. One nominator describes him as the true essence of diversity of thought, intellect and culture.
