Gloria B. Rie is the founder and president of The Humanitarium: Center for Culture and Diversity, a non-profit educational organization dedicated to eliminating bias and increasing diversity awareness through arts and education in Kentucky communities and schools. She is a full-time volunteer who, since 1995, has worked tirelessly to increase understanding and promote change and acceptance of human diversity while creating connections among people of different backgrounds. Under her supervision, the Humanitarium produced Lexington’s first Diversity Directory now in its fourth edition, which is a tool for helping citizens locate over 100 diversity-oriented organizations that promote multiculturalism and honor the diverse people of the Kentucky Bluegrass area. According to her supporter, one of her most remarkable achievements is “The Unsung Heroes,” a photographic exhibit of ordinary people who make extraordinary contributions to our community, now touring the Bluegrass area. Her efforts brought the nationally acclaimed Facing History and We curriculum to Lexington and surrounding counties. The curriculum’s mission is to engage students of diverse backgrounds in a historical examination of racism, prejudice and anti-Semitism in order to promote a more humane and informed citizenry.
