Joseph L. Fink

PAD 2007 winners

Joseph L. Fink is professor in the colleges of Pharmacy and Public Health, and the Martin School of Public Policy and Administration; a faculty associate in the Appalachian Center and the UK Center on Drug and Alcohol Research; and program associate with the UK Program for Bioethics and Patients' Rights. His activities led the institution to fully embrace selective admissions while at the same time reaching out to fashion an approach to freshman admissions that would advance the academic profile of the entering class while at the same time diversifying it more than in the past, which led to a record minority undergraduate enrollment. In the role as assistant vice president for Research and Graduate Studies and associate vice president for research, Fink administered two postdoctoral fellowship programs, the Lyman T. Johnson Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (aimed at minority scholars), and the Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Women. One nominator stated that under his skillful and tireless guidance, the university enjoyed success in each measure he implemented, his commitment to and leadership in the area of minority recruitment was remarkable. He is able to see the need for implementation of actions prior to an issue becoming problematic. He initiated programs that have dramatically impacted successful minority recruitment during his tenure and to the present day.
