Lori Stewart Gonzalez

PAD 2007 winners

Lori Stewart Gonzalez has been with the College of Health Sciences since 1991, serving as a faculty member in Communication Disorders, associate dean for Academic Affairs and, since 2005, as dean of the college. She has a record of commitment to diversity in its broadest sense. In her first faculty position, she led graduate students in research projects pertaining to diverse populations, serving on two thesis committees and a doctoral committee focused on speech and language in African-American children. She investigated the strategies used by communication disorders preparation programs to promote diversity in the profession and prepare students to serve diverse populations. This nominee has applied for a Quality Enhancement Program to embark on a college wide cultural climate improvement plan. The proposal involved a series of instructional and professional development activities for all groups as well as surveys to gauge impact on change in attitudes and behaviors for each of these groups. Her approach ensured that diversity was conceptualized in a broad manner going beyond a single framework such as racial/ethnic differences to other cultural differences associated with gender, sexual orientation, age, religious or geographic background, socioeconomic status, or physical and mental capabilities.
