The President's Commission on Diversity announces a call for nominations for the 2006 President's Award for Diversity. The new 2003-2006 Strategic Plan of the University of Kentucky recognizes the importance of institutional diversity and has established a definitive goal for the University to nurture diversity of thought, culture, gender and ethnicity. In recognition of this important objective, the University has established the President's Award for Diversity (PAD) in honor and appreciation of those who have demonstrated outstanding efforts toward advancing the University's mission of embracing diversity while maintaining academic excellence.

Award Categories

The President's Award for Diversity will be awarded in the following six categories:

    1. UK student
    2. UK staff member
    3. UK faculty member
    4. UK administrator (President's Staff, Deans, Dept. Heads/Chairs, etc.)
    5. UK unit or department
    6. Other individual or agency from Kentucky

Award Criteria

Nominees in each category must have met one or more of the following criteria:

  • Demonstrate a consistent pattern of firm commitment to the recruitment and retention of individuals of underrepresented populations.
  • Cultivate and promote diversity initiatives that establish and foster a more inclusive and equitable work/learning environment
  • Consistently demonstrate efforts exceeding his or her mandated job responsibilities to promote and ensure diversity.
  • Promote and facilitate equitable education and social engagement with and between people of varying ethnic or religious backgrounds, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and/or physical and mental capabilities.
  • Exhibit visionary and insightful leadership to confront and resolve inequities through strategic decision-making, allocation of resources, and establishment of priorities.
  • Create new and progressive best practices that support the diversity goal of the UK Strategic Plan.

Award Nominations

Nomination instructions can be accessed here. Nominations, to be submitted in written or electronic form, should include the following:

    1. Cover letter with nominee/nominator/award type information
    2. Written nomination- limit of two pages
    3. Letters of recommendation from nominee's colleagues, supervisors, students, etc.- limit of three
    4. Current resume or curriculum vitae of nominee
    5. As supporting evidence, one example of nominee's work demonstrative of award criteria; (examples can include publications, program materials, curriculum outlines, research projects, etc.)

Only complete nominations will be considered. Self-nominations are permitted in all categories. Re-submission of past nominees not chosen as recipients is encouraged.

Award Recipients - New Date & Time for Awards Ceremony!

Recipients of the President's Awards for Diversity will be selected by members of the President's Commission on Diversity Awards Committee. Award recipients will receive $500 and a plaque in recognition and appreciation of their achievements. A public awards ceremony will be held on Monday, April 17, 2006, 3:30p.m. in the BBSRB Atrium, and award recipients will not be publicly announced until this time.

Award Nomination Deadline


Deadline for nominations for 2006 awards is March 6, 2006. All materials must be received at the address below or submitted electronically by the close of business on March 6. Please direct all questions to the following:
