Circles of Power Hall of Fame

The Circles of Power program is built on the premise that leadership skills are acquired and developed over an extended period of time, not in an isolated workshop. The program offers a multilevel process that includes the establishment of a network of colleagues, training in management theory, encouragement, and collaboration.

COPs Grads were asked, "How has COPs benefited your professional development?"

Hollie Swanson

My national reputation has increased as indicated by my participation in reviewing NIH (National Institutes of Health) larger grants (center and project grants), serving on an advisory board and serving on national committeess (National Academy of Science, Institute of Medicine, Society of Toxicology Program Committee). I have also completed a shadowing program with Dean Jay Perman (UK College of Medicine). More importantly, however is my individual growth. This can be directly attributed to my involvement in the COPs program. What energizes me is when I participate in campus-wide groups, such as the Faculty Senate and see my COPs colleagues and know that we share many common goals and that yes....we can and are making a difference.

Since participating in the Circle of Power program in 2006-07, I have been selected by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) as a 2007-2008 participant in the Research Library Leadership Fellows Program (RLLF). This prestigious fellowship was created in response to increasing demands for succession planning at research libraries. The RLLF program offers a new approach to preparing the next generation of library leaders, which benefits what I'm able to contribute to UK as Director of Archives in Special Collections and Digital Programs.

Lisa Tannock

Lisa Tannock

Since COPs, I have obtained a National Institutes of Health grant, I am now the assistant Program Director of a newly accredited Endocrinology fellowship program at UK, and just recently I was appointed as Interim Division Chief of Endocrinology. Hopefully, these accomplishments are just the start, and I attribute my success to COPs. Since completing COPs I use the skills and techniques we learned on a near daily basis. In particular, learning to identify and work with people of various personality types (those 4 letters) has been of particular help. Most important, however, has been the network of incredible women I have met through COPs, and the resources they provide in my ongoing development.
