University of Kentucky student Anthony Jones is the second UK student this
year to be awarded the prestigious Truman Scholarship, a $30,000, three-year award that
will cover the expenses of Jones' senior year and two years of graduate school. Jones'
selection makes UK one of only eight universities to have two students receive the
scholarship in 1999.
Jones,
21, of Paducah, is majoring in political science.
A 1996 graduate of Lone Oak High School who also attended
Paducah Community College, he has earned a 3.691 grade
point average. Jones plans to pursue his master's
degree in labor relations and obtain a law degree
focusing on labor law.
He has completed an internship with the AFL-CIO in Chicago. He also works at UK's
Martin Luther King Jr. Cultural Center as a program and staff assistant.
He joins Monica J. Grant as a 1999 Truman Scholar from UK. The Harry S. Truman
Scholarship Foundation previously had announced Grant's selection. He and Grant are among
79 students from 67 institutions who won the scholarships. They were selected from 657
applicants.
Jones and Grant bring to seven the number of UK students who have received Truman
Scholarships. The others are Karen Campbell in 1979, Laura Neack in 1980, Jennifer L.
Howard in 1988, Paul Presler in 1990 and Melody Flowers in 1998.
Truman Scholarships provide $3,000 for a student's senior year and $27,000 for two or
three years of graduate study. Established in 1975, the Harry
S. Truman Scholarship Foundation selects scholarship winners based on leadership
potential, intellectual ability and the likelihood of "making a difference."
