Wade Hall Quilt Collection |
August
2, 1999 (Lexington, Ky.) More than 100
quilts collected by Bellarmine College professor Wade Hall will be the focus of
celebration during an afternoon of activities, lectures and demonstrations beginning at
noon Friday, Aug. 13 at the William T. Young Library at the University of Kentucky. A
$25 program fee includes a luncheon lecture by Victoria Faoro, director of the American
Quilting Society Museum; a lecture and slide presentation by UK art professor Arturo
Sandoval; a demonstration by Barbara West on mounting quilts for display; and quilt
appraisals by reservation by professional consultant Helen Thompson, who prepared the Wade
Hall Quilt Collection for display in the library.
The collection, donated by Hall to the library before it opened in April 1998, is
displayed on the fifth floor of the library. Sixty-four are on display at any given time,
with others rotated in and out.
Hall, a retired professor of English and the humanities, collected the quilts over a
period of 30 years. They were purchased primarily in the Ohio Valley region, many within a
100-mile radius of Lexington. The quilts were used by previous owners and bear stains,
tears, fading fabric and irregular shapes resulting from everyday use.
