Aug.
24, 1999 (Lexington, Ky.) As rain
complicated the devastating conditions that already existed in northwestern Turkey, a
group of University of Kentucky students is asking for donations to the American Red Cross
Turkish Earthquake Relief effort. "Your donations will supply shelter, medicine,
food and necessary supplies for the people who are desperately in need," said Hasan
Zeytin of the UK Turkish Students Association.
You can make your donation by telephone, by check or on-line at www.redcross.org or by
sending your check to The American Red Cross Bluegrass Chapter,
Turkish Earthquake Fund, 1450 Newtown Pike, Lexington, KY 40511-1220 (606) 253-1331.
Health officials fear that the rain, which is forecast to
continue for several days, will foul drinking water with bacteria from the tens of
thousands of bodies they believe are in the wreckage.
As of noon Monday, the official casualty count was listed at 12,134 dead and 33,384
injured. Some politicians and relief leaders have estimated as many as 40,000 people may
have perished and believe thousands of bodies are still entombed by rubble.
Amid the destruction, a miracle: In Cinarcik, 30 miles south of Istanbul, 4-year-old
Ismail Cimen was saved Monday after spending more than six days trapped in the wreckage of
his home.
