July 20, 1999 – (Lexington, Ky.) – A scholarship posthumously honoring Christopher T. Maier, a third-year theater student from North Canton, Ohio, who died Aug. 27, 1997, has been established at the University of Kentucky.

Maier, 21, and a woman student were assaulted while walking back to campus from a party. Maier died as a result of his injuries. A suspect is in custody.

Nearly $7,000 has already been raised for the scholarship endowment among Maier's friends and UK theater department patrons and associates.

Additionally, a member of Maier's fraternity, Phi Kappa Psi, has agreed to match the first $5,000 contributed to the scholarship endowment by a member of the UK chapter of the fraternity, said Joshua Mitchell. Mitchell, a friend of Maier who was president of the Kentucky chapter when Maier was a pledge, is on the staff of Phi Kappa Psi's national headquarters in Indianapolis, Ind.

"Chris was such a kind-spirited person and I want to see that quality honored each year through these scholarships," Mitchell said.

As many scholarships as the endowment can support will be awarded each year to UK theater students who have "a passion for theater, generosity of spirit, a caring attitude towards all, as well as a zest for life," according to the wording of the scholarship endowment.

UK Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity members who want their contributions matched should send their contribution checks, made out to the University of Kentucky, to Joshua Mitchell, 510 Lockerbie Street, Indianapolis, IN 46202.

Other contributions for the scholarship endowment may be sent to the Theatre Department, 114 Fine Arts Building, University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY 40506-0022, or the UK Development Office, Sturgill Development Building, University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY 40506-0015.
