Dan Adkins, 606-257-1754
March 15, 1999 -- (Lexington, Ky.) -- Charles L. Overby, chairman and chief executive officer of The Freedom Forum, will give the 1999 Creason Lecture on Monday, April 5, at the University of Kentucky's Singletary Center for the Arts.
The Joe Creason Lecture Series, named for the UK graduate and Louisville Courier-Journal columnist and humorist who died in 1974, annually brings an outstanding journalist to the UK campus to meet with students and to speak before an assembly of students, faculty and media professionals as well as the public.
Overby, 51, is a former Pulitzer Prize-winning editor in Jackson, Miss., who now heads the Freedom Forum, an independent, nonpartisan foundation dedicated to First Amendment and media issues. The foundation has more than $1 billion in assets, and has offices in New York, San Francisco, Hong Kong, London, Buenos Aires and Johannesburg. He also oversees the foundation's $50 million Newseum, a state-of-the-art museum dedicated to journalism, in Arlington, Va., and the Freedom Forum First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University.
As a reporter, Overby covered the White House, presidential campaigns, Congress and the Supreme Court.
