TO RECEIVE NATIONAL HONOR
George Lewis, 606-257-1754
March 24, 1999 -- (Lexington, Ky.) Georgia Collins, professor emeritus of art education at the University of Kentucky, will receive the 1999 National Higher Education Art Educator of the Year Award in ceremonies in Washington, D.C., March 24-28.
"Dr. Collins will receive the award for numerous reasons. But the biggest reason is because she is a leader in publication and dissemination of research and educational resources devoted to gender and equity issues in art education," said Bernard Young, professor of art education at Arizona State University and director of the Higher Education Division of the National Art Education Association.
The research and writings of Collins, who retired from UK Feb. 1, focused on womens issues on women in art and art education and the related role womens art plays in the public school curriculum. She wrote numerous articles and co-authored two books on the subject.
Collins, who received her masters and doctorate degrees at UK, served as editor of "Studies in Art Education," the research and issues journal for art education.
The Higher Education Division of the National Art Education Association is the world's largest professional art education association, promoting leadership and educational research, policy, and practice.
