March 29, 1999 -- (Lexington, Ky.) -- Monica J. Grant, a junior majoring in anthropology at the University of Kentucky, has been awarded the prestigious Truman Scholarship, a $30,000 award spread over three years. Grant is one of 75 students who received the scholarships nationwide.

The award provides $3,000 for the student's senior year and $27,000 for two or three years of graduate study. Established in 1975, the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation selects scholarship winners based on leadership potential, intellectual ability and the likelihood of "making a difference."

Monica GrantGrant, 20, of 5707 Omega St., Louisville, has a 3.95 grade point average in her pursuit of her bachelor's degree, and plans to seek her M.D. and master's in public health degrees with a concentration in community health. She already is a Singletary Scholar

While attending du Pont Manual Magnet High School in Louisville, Grant earned advanced placement college credits from the University of Louisville. She came to UK in August 1996, and has participated in UK's Study Abroad Program in Spain in 1998.

She has been active in a variety of community service activities, including volunteering at the Bone Marrow Transplant Clinic at UK's Markey Cancer Center, at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, in the UK Chandler Medical Center's Young Parent's program and in the archaeology lab.

Grant's selection as a Truman Scholar marks the second straight year that a UK student has received the honor. In 1998, Melody Flowers of Huntington, W.Va., won the three-year scholarship.
