October 1, 1999 – (Lexington, Ky.) – Noted African-American feminist scholar and author Barbara Smith will give a presentation on social justice and change Monday, Oct. 11, at the University of Kentucky.

As a critic, teacher, activist, lecturer and publisher, Smith was among the first to define the African-American women's literary tradition and perpetuate black women's studies and black feminism in the United States. Her work has brought her much acclaim and makes her a sought-after speaker on many social issues, especially racism and bigotry.

Smith's UK presentation, "The Truth That Never Hurts: 30 Years of Writing About Justice and Social Change," will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the President's Room of the Singletary Center for the Arts.

The event is co-sponsored by the UK African-American Student Affairs Office and the African-American Studies and Research Program. It is free and open to the public.
