October 1, 1999 (Lexington, Ky.) On
Thursday, Oct. 7, the Martin Luther King Jr. Cultural Center will sponsor an appearance by
independent award-winning filmmaker Aishah Shahidah Simmons. During her visit, Simmons
will showcase her documentary film, "No!" The
film, a work-in-progress, addresses the issues surrounding rape in the African-American
community. Using narrative, archival footage, personal testimonies, music, dance and
poetry, "No!" explores the underlying issues of race, gender, class and sexual
orientation as they relate to sexual assaults on African-American women and girls.
"No!" challenges the community to confront these issues in understanding the
implications that sexual assault has on the community at large. Above all, "No!"
aims to initiate the healing of the political, psychological and cultural scars that are
associated with the collective silence of rape in the African-American community.
Simmons
will present her film at 7 p.m. Oct. 7 in the Student Center Theater. A discussion on the
film and other issues relating to rape in the African-American community will follow.
Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, call the cultural center
at 257-4130.
This
event is part of the "50 Years of African Americans at UK," a commemoration
marking the 50-year anniversary of desegregation at the university.
