The University
of Kentucky Panhellenic Council received national accolades Oct. 16 at the National
Panhellenic Conference (NPC) in Tampa. The council received the College Panhellenic
Committee Recruitment Award for its recruiting functions during the 1997-1999 biennium.
The council competed with 32 other universities with 10 or more sorority chapters. The
1999 honor gives UK Panhellenic more NPC awards than any other sorority council in the
nation."We are very proud of and excited about the continued success of all our
women," said Susan West, associate dean of students for UK. "We focus on
continuous recruitment and are constantly trying to improve our events."
The award was given to UK for its excellent open bidding procedures, thorough member
recruitment training program, rigid institution of NPC guidelines, control of member
recruitment functions and numerous promotional materials.
"The Greek system is incredibly organized and has excellent leaders, so I was not
totally surprised by our win," said Stephanie Yater, UK Panhellenic president-elect.
"To receive this award is a great honor."
Among its other NPC awards are the 1991 College Panhellenic Committee Recruitment
Award, the 1995 Progress Award for continuous improvement during the biennium and the 1997
Overall Excellence Award for quality during the previous two years.
In addition to the number of sorority chapters in the Greek system, the UK Panhellenic
Council was required to meet academic standards to be eligible for NPC honors. To receive
an honor, Panhellenic grade point averages must be higher than that of the general female
student body over the biennium.
