RACIAL IMAGES ARE TOPIC OF LECTURE SERIES

Four lectures analyzing racial images and stereotypes primarily in advertising will be presented during the series.

Oct. 18, 1999 – (Lexington, Ky.) – The University of Kentucky's African-American Studies and Research Program will present the 1999-2000 topical lecture series "The Enduring Image of Race in Black and White" with several events throughout the fall and spring semesters.

The scheduled events are:

• "The Three Lives of Aunt Jemima and Uncle Mose," 4 p.m., Nov. 8, by University of Memphis history professor Kenneth W. Goings, UK Student Center Theater.

• "Collecting Fantasies: Is Aunt Jemima Really a Black Woman?" 4 p.m., Nov. 19, by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill African and African-American art history professor Michael D. Harris, Student Center Theater.

• "Selling Jemima: How an Advertising Campaign Put Mammy to Work," 4 p.m., Feb. 21, 2000, by University of Missouri history professor Maurice Manring, Room 230, UK Student Center.

• "From Exploitation to Appropriation? Viewing Contemporary Black Images from an Historical Perspective," 4 p.m., Feb. 28, 2000, by African-American and African studies professor Patricia Turner, Student Center Theater.
