June
14, 2001 (Lexington, Ky.) University
of Kentucky President Charles T. Wethington Jr. today announced that the Campaign for the University of Kentucky has
raised more than $403 million in the three years since beginning the largest fund-raising
project in state history. The university goal is to raise $600 million by June 2003 to
enhance faculty, students, facilities, academic programs and public service. Wethington
made the announcement with campaign steering committee chairperson James W. Stuckert of
Louisville.
This
is a wonderful and momentous day in the life of the university, Wethington said.
We are achieving success because of the overwhelming support of thousands of alumni
and friends, companies large and small across Kentucky and the nation, and many
foundations and organizations.
More
than 172,000 gifts have been made to the campaign, with 313 of those in excess of
$100,000. As a direct result of campaign fund raising, the university has created 52 new
endowed chair positions and 112 new endowed professorships.
When
the University of Kentucky is recognized in years to come as one of the nations top
public institutions, we all will know how important this campaign was in helping us
achieve that goal, Wethington said.
We
have enjoyed tremendous success in the first years of the campaign, said Terry B.
Mobley, UKs chief development officer, and I am confident we will reach our
goal of $600 million through the continued support of the university community, and alumni
and friends everywhere.
