Commencement

6 , 2002 (Lexington, Ky.) --
A record number of students received degrees that
will be awarded at the University of Kentucky's 135th
commencement on Sunday, May 5, in Memorial Coliseum
on Euclid Avenue.
Commencement
honored a total of 5,600 graduates, including those
who completed degree requirements in August and December
2001 as well as those finishing their work this spring.
The commencement
speaker was UK President Lee T. Todd Jr., who is completing
his first year as UK's 11th president. Here are some
of the other features of the 2002 UK Commencement:
Jennifer
Lynn Kasten of Lexington, a National Merit Scholar,
Gaines Fellow and Marshall Scholarship winner, delivered
the student commencement address.
Sullivan
Medallions were presented to Lexington homebuilder
Don Ball and graduating seniors Amanda Holloway and
James (Jay) John Varellas III.
Honorary
doctorates were presented to Sister Rosemary Howarth,
former UK Vice President Wimberly C. Royster, and
well-known high school basketball coach Sanford T.
Roach. "
The William
B. Sturgill Award for a graduate faculty member was
presented to Susan E. Carvalho, associate professor
in the Department of Spanish and Italian.
The Albert
D. and Elizabeth Kirwan Memorial Prize for research
was presented to Thomas A. Widiger, professor of psychology.
The Lexington
Community College commencement was conducted at 7
p.m. Friday, May 3, in Memorial Coliseum. LCC conferred
more than 400 associate degrees in arts, science and
applied science.
