22, 2002 (Lexington, Ky.) -- The
fall semester at the University of Kentucky is upon
us - students begin classes on Wednesday, Aug. 28.
Kentucky
Welcome is a week set aside at the beginning of
each fall semester to help new students make the transition
to college life and to the UK community. The week
includes open houses, academic college meetings, information
sessions and large social events.
During
Kentucky Welcome, new students are able to meet other
new students, upperclassmen, faculty, staff and administrators.Here
are some highlight events that will take place during
the first days of the fall semester.
Friday, Aug. 23
New students begin moving into residence halls
New students who are participating in Kentucky Welcome,
UK's welcome and orientation week, will begin moving
into residence halls at 9 a.m. President and Mrs.
Lee T. Todd Jr. will be on hand at the Kirwan-Blanding
complex on South campus to greet students and distribute
water, soft drinks and hot dogs from 9 - 11 a.m. Move-in
will continue Aug. 23-27.
Saturday,
Aug. 24
Kentucky Get-To-Know-You Gathering
The UK Parent Association offers this event to allow
Kentucky residents to meet other parents and students
from their part of the state. The gathering will be
held in 230 Student Center from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Out-of-State
Get-To-Know-You Gatherings
The UK Parent Association offers this event to allow
out-of-state residents to meet other parents and students
from their states. The gatherings will be held in
230, 206, 245, 359, 357 and 363 Student Center from
11 a.m. to noon.
CatWalk:
New Student Processional (required event for new students)
New students and their families will be greeted by
members of the university community at 3:30 p.m. as
they enter Memorial Coliseum for Opening Convocation.
Opening
Convocation (required event for new students)
Parents, other family members and guests are invited
to join their students to the official opening of
the fall semester by President Lee T. Todd Jr. The
convocation will be at 4 p.m. in Memorial Coliseum.
Big
Blue Barbecue
Students and their families are invited to attend
this free picnic and mingle with UK President Todd,
First Lady Patsy Todd, college deans, faculty and
staff. The barbecue will be held at Stoll Field from
4:45 - 6 p.m.
UK Football
Fan Day
Fan appreciation day will feature an autograph session
with players and coaches, fun activities and chances
to win gifts. The UK Band, cheerleaders and Wildcat
mascot will be on hand to greet fans. Fan Day is free
and will be held at Commonwealth Stadium from 6 -
8 p.m.
Sunday, Aug. 25-27: Move-in for all students
begins at 8 a.m.
Wednesday,
Aug. 28 Classes Begin

p.m. - Wildcat Extravaganza
Come to
Haggin Field to meet UK Women's Basketball Coach Bernadette
Maddox and several UK athletes. There will be music,
speakers, free pizza and door prizes. All students
are welcome. Come and start the year in Wildcat fashion.
Sponsored by local campus ministry groups.
Friday,
August 30
(Residence Hall students should check with their Resident
Adviser to find out about various events occurring
on campus this weekend.)
9 p.m.
Movie: Men in Black
(North Campus Courtyard) All students are invited
to enjoy an outdoor movie sponsored by the Office
of Residence Life.
10:30
p.m. Movie: Save the Last Dance
(North Campus Courtyard) All students are invited
to enjoy an outdoor movie sponsored by the Office
of Residence Life. Rain site will be Holmes Hall lobby.
