UK Communications Student Wins $2,500 Advertising Scholarship

The daughter of Tom and Donna Schomaker of Villa Hills, Ky., the communications student said she is looking forward to serving two communications internships. One will be during the summer months of 2003 at Sanitation District #1 in Fort Wright, Ky., and another during the fall of 2003 at Host Communications in Lexington.

 

April 28, 2003 (Lexington, Ky.) -- Sandra Schomaker, a University of Kentucky junior majoring in integrated strategic communications in the College of Communications and Information Studies, has won a $2,500 American Advertising Federation Scholarship.

Schomaker, a graduate of Notre Dame Academy in Park Hills, Ky., said she has always had an interest in design and layout of advertising. “I like the creative aspect of advertising,” she said.

Schomaker is an active UK student. She is a member of Golden Key International Honour Society and Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and has recently been elected to UK’s Student Government. She has won the Panhellenic Academic Excellence Award, a Brooks Academic Excellence Scholarship, and a Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship.

Her community service interests have led her to volunteer at the Lexington Disability Resource Center, Habitat for Humanity, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, and Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Center among others. In her sorority, Schomaker has served as vice president of organization and other responsibilities.
