Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Princess Anne Visits UK Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Princess Anne is in Lexington to help open the art exhibit “All the Queen's Horses: The Role of the Horse in British History,” April 26 through Aug. 24 at the Kentucky Horse Park. All members of the Royal family will be providing pieces for the exhibition.

 

April 26, 2003 (Lexington, Ky.) -- Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Princess Anne toured the University of Kentucky Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center today, gaining firsthand knowledge of the roles UK scientists are playing in equine gene mapping and the prevention and cure of diseases such as mare reproductive loss syndrome (MRLS), which devastated the thoroughbred industry two years ago.

“We are extremely pleased that Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Princess Anne was able to visit the Gluck Center,” said UK President Lee T. Todd Jr. “Her presence today indicates the strong bond that exists between our two countries.”

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Princess Anne is in Lexington to help open the art exhibit “All the Queen's Horses: The Role of the Horse in British History,” April 26 through Aug. 24 at the Kentucky Horse Park. All members of the Royal family will be providing pieces for the exhibition.

In England today, the Royal family remains intimately involved with horses. An accomplished equestrienne, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Princess Anne has represented her country as a member of the English three-day-event team.

At the Gluck Equine Research Center, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Princess Anne visited the laboratories of George Allen, who is researching equine herpes; Thomas Chambers, equine influenza virus; Thomas Tobin, equine protozoal myelitis; Ernest Bailey, equine gene mapping; David Powell, mare reproductive loss syndrome; and Peter Timoney, West Nile virus.

The Gluck Center has helped provide a healthy future for the $25 billion horse racing industry and is one of just three research centers of its caliber in the world.

The visit by the Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Princess Anne was coordinated by the British Consulate-General, Chicago, Ill., and the office of Kentucky Governor Paul Patton.
