Local Students Eligible for UK Summer Programs

Participants in each program will spend five-and-a-half weeks on the UK campus interacting with UK Chandler Medical Center physicians and dentists. Students participate in enrichment classes and take part in hospital rotations in labor and delivery, surgery and the UK Hospital emergency department. Seminars on topics such as cancer, primary care, birth defects, and medical and dental school admissions are components of both programs. Dormitory housing and a stipend for meals are provided.

 

Feb. 21, 2003 (Lexington, Ky.) -- Local students interested in pursuing a career as a physician or dentist are eligible to participate in the University of Kentucky Professional Education Preparation Program (PEPP) summer workshops.

Designed to assist students from medically underserved areas, the PEPP program is open to high school seniors. PEPP II, which prepares students to take the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) or the Dental Admissions Test (DAT), is open to students who have completed at least two years of college.

The deadline to apply to the PEPP program is Monday, March 3, 2003. The PEPP II deadline is Monday, March 10, 2003. Students do not have to attend a Kentucky college to be eligible. However, students must have a permanent home residence in one of the counties listed below:

Allen, Ballard, Bath, Bell, Boyd, Bracken, Breathitt, Breckinridge, Bullitt, Butler, Campbell, Carroll, Carter, Casey, Clay, Crittenden, Cumberland, Edmonson, Elliott, Estill, Fleming, Floyd, Gallatin, Garrard, Grant, Grayson, Green, Greenup, Hancock, Harlan, Hart, Henry, Hickman, Jackson, Knott, Knox, Laurel, Lawrence, Lee, Leslie, Letcher, Lewis, Logan, Lyon, Madison, Magoffin, Martin, McLean, Meade, Menifee, Morgan, Muhlenberg, Nicholas, Ohio, Owen, Owsley, Pendelton, Perry, Pike, Powell, Robertson, Rockcastle, Spencer, Todd, Trigg, Trimble, Washington, Wayne, Whitley and Wolfe. PEPP summer programs also are offered at the University of Louisville and the Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine.
