Phyllis Nash Is Named President’s Chief of Staff

Jan. 30, 2003 (Lexington, Ky.) -- Phyllis P. Nash, associate vice president for academic and student affairs at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center, has been named chief of staff to UK President Lee T. Todd Jr. The appointment is subject to approval by the UK Board of Trustees.

Nash, 56, will be responsible for the efficient operation of the President’s Office, including management of scheduling, staffing and operating procedures. She will report directly to Todd, providing advice and counsel. She will serve as a member of the president’s executive staff, working closely and collaboratively with the senior leadership team, the UK Board of Trustees, executive and administrative colleagues, faculty, and student leaders.

In addition, Nash will organize the information flow to and from the president to ensure that important issues receive Todd’s immediate attention. She will brief the president on policy issues, review and analyze proposals, track important projects and issues, assist in the appointment process, and manage the President’s Office budget.

Nash is a professor of behavioral science in the UK College of Medicine and holds a joint appointment as professor of surgery. She also sees clients as a clinical social worker.

She came to UK in 1987 as a visiting lecturer from West Virginia University. From 1982 to 1987, she was an assistant professor with tenure at WVU School of Medicine in the Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry. She had been an instructor in that department from 1979 to 1982. She joined UK College of Medicine as a tenured associate professor of behavioral science in 1988. In 1991, Nash was named vice chancellor for academic and student affairs for the UK Chandler Medical Center. The title was changed in 2001 to associate vice president.

Her research has been published extensively in academic journals, including Academic Medicine and Medical Teacher. She also has made numerous presentations at professional conferences.

In recent years, she chaired the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations’ Professional-Technical Committee on Mental Health and served on the board of the Kentucky Chapter of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. She also has served on numerous committees of the National Association of Social Workers.

Nash received the YWCA Women of Achievement Award in 1996, and has been recognized by the Golden Key Honor Society and Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honorary. She also has won the Award for Excellence in Education in Surgery. She is a member of the National Association of Social Workers.

Nash earned her bachelor’s degree in 1968 from UK, her master’s degree in social work in 1979 from West Virginia University, and her doctorate in education in 1985 from WVU.

She and her husband, David A. Nash, have two grown daughters and two grandchildren.
