UK Markey Cancer Center Director to Serve as SSO President

Cohen serves in a number of leadership roles in several national organizations. He is the chair of the Commission on Cancer and the chair of the Colorectal section of the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group. Cohen also serves on the National Quality Forum Cancer Steering Committee, Scientific Advisory Board, Yale University Cancer Center and the American Joint Commission on Cancer.

 

March 28, 2003 (Lexington, Ky.) -- Alfred Cohen, M.D., professor of surgery, University of Kentucky College of Medicine, and director of the UK Markey Cancer Center, was elected president of the Society of Surgical Oncology at the 56th Annual Cancer Symposium earlier this month. The Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) was founded in 1940 as the James Ewing Society and is committed to ensuring that all cancer patients receive the highest quality, comprehensive, multi-modal cancer care.

Cohen has been an SSO member since 1978. During this time, he has held numerous offices and leadership positions that have substantially advanced the society’s mission.

Cohen serves in a number of leadership roles in several national organizations. He is the chair of the Commission on Cancer and the chair of the Colorectal section of the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group. Cohen also serves on the National Quality Forum Cancer Steering Committee, Scientific Advisory Board, Yale University Cancer Center and the American Joint Commission on Cancer. Cohen also is leading a national coordinated program of the American College of Surgeons, the Foundation for Advanced Medical Educations and the Association for Surgical Education to optimize the operative treatment of patients with rectal cancer.
