Conference Focuses on Books for Youth in a Changing World

In addition to the speeches and panel sessions, children’s literature will be exhibited at the conference. March 7, 2003 (Lexington, Ky.) -- An author who has written 30 books for youth and a book illustrator whose work was selected in 2001 by School Library Journal as one of the 100 Books That Shaped the Century list will be featured at the 35th McConnell Children’s Literature Conference March 28-29.

The conference, co-sponsored by the UK School of Library and Information Science and Book Wholesalers, Inc., will be held at Marriott’s Griffin Gate Resort on Newtown Pike.

Richard Peck, a native of Decatur, Ill., who now lives in New York City, will address the conference at a banquet set to begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 28. His topic will be “Preparing the Literate for Change.”

Peck has received many awards for his youth books. His book “A Year Down Yonder” won the 2001 Newbery Award. His most recent book is “Invitations to the World: Teaching and Writing for the Young.”

Chris Raschka, a book illustrator whose work has won New York Times Best Illustrated Book of the Year Awards, will address the conference at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 29. His topic is “Making Little Books for Little Hands I Cannot See.”

Raschka, who grew up in Pennsylvania, Germany and Chicago, is a man of many interests, including freelance art work, painting, music and teaching. After graduating from college in 1981, he taught in St. Croix, Virgin Islands.
