The
university will provide regular updates here, by phone
on
the UK Infoline (257-5684), and on UK Cable TV Channel
16.
Since the
war has started and the national security has been
moved to "orange" we have done several things
out of the ordinary that you need to know about.
- We have secured the Police Building, meaning
that you can't just walk in. You have to go through
some security check.
- We have done the same thing in the dormitories.
- We have put the bollards back up in that u-shaped
drive at the Young Library.
- We have also clamped down on vehicles coming up
the hill to Gillis, with more scrutiny of trucks
and other vehicles that pass the gate house on the
way up the hill.
- We have also stepped up security at the loading
docks in the Complex. (3/24/2003 2:40 p.m.)
Members of
the university community may notice the following
increased security measures.
- Roadways adjacent to campus buildings may have
limited access and parking, even temporary parking
in loading zones may be limited to official University
vehicles.
- Visitors to campus may be asked to wear identification
badges or to be escorted.
- Access to the residence halls will be limited
to residents, their families, and University officials.
- All packages will be delivered to one location
and departments will be asked to make arrangements
to pick up their packages.
- Events open to the public may be canceled on a
case by case basis. Commencement and associated
activities are not expected to be affected. (3/21/2003
1:00 p.m.)
International
students and scholars receive regular updates via
e-mail from the Office of International Affairs (OIA).
Anyone with concerns should contact OIA. Most students
and scholars have a contact in the office, but by
calling the main number, 257-4067, our electronic
directory or an operator will direct your call to
the most appropriate person.
Special efforts are being made to ensure the safety
and well-being of our international students and scholars.
Those who are not currently living on campus will
be offered the opportunity to move into a campus facility
if they so desire.
If you are planning to travel abroad, you should
access the Department of State’s Web site for
travel: www.travel.state.gov.
(3/21/2003 12:30 p.m.)
At
the announcement of an Orange Level Security status
the following are implemented:
- Enhanced patrols by Division of Police personnel.
Higher risk locations/facilities have been identified
and security checks and patrols at these locations
are increased.
- Any special events being hosted by LFUCG or occurring
within Lexington-Fayette County are given increased
monitoring by emergency response personnel.
- Internal LFUCG emergency response agency security
is increased and facilities/equipment are insured
to be in operational readiness.
- Liaison is made with other emergency response
agencies/operational groups in Fayette County to
ascertain needs and insure that lines of communication
are open and function with reciprocity.
(3/20/2003 10:30 p.m.)
University
of Kentucky Police recommend that those areas of campus
that are not open to public traffic or regular student
traffic be locked down with admission by valid UK
ID only. The Public Safety Building (305 Euclid Ave.)
has been locked down and a buzzer system with visual
ID is required for public entry.
Security is everyone's responsibility. Everyone is
a security expert; treat the UK campus as you would
your home. If there is someone unusual in your area,
call the UK Police, 257-1617. If you see what you
consider unusual activity, call the UK Police. Remember,
above everything else, terrorists are criminals using
criminal activity to intimidate the public, and as
with any criminal activity the public can fight back
by being vigilant and notifying the authorities. (3/20/2003
