"We are extremely pleased that Terry has accepted this position. He has done an outstanding job as Affirmative Action director. Given his long experience in our Equal Opportunity Office, he is intimately familiar with our campus, our organization and our people. This familiarity will serve him extremely well in the many challenges he will face in his new position. Terry has always been an outstanding representative of the University of Kentucky, and I was delighted to be able to name someone of his background and integrity to this position.”

March 3, 2003 (Lexington, Ky.) -- Terry D. Allen, assistant vice president for affirmative action at the University of Kentucky, has been named the associate vice president for employment equity, filling the position vacated by the retirement of Nancy Ray. The appointment is subject to approval by the UK Board of Trustees.

Allen will be responsible for monitoring the University Affirmative Action Program for provision of equal opportunities in academic programs and employment, and compliance with federal and state regulations.

" We are extremely pleased that Terry has accepted this position," said Jack Blanton, acting senior vice president for administration. "He has done an outstanding job as assistant vice president for affirmative action. Given his long experience in our Equal Opportunity Office, he is intimately familiar with our campus, our organization and our people. This familiarity will serve him extremely well in the many challenges he will face in his new position. Terry has always been an outstanding representative of the University of Kentucky, and I was delighted to be able to name someone of his background and integrity to this position."

"I cannot recall a time when the expressed commitment to provide equal opportunity at the University of Kentucky has been more prevalent," Allen said. "I am pleased to contribute to this effort."

Allen came to UK in June 1983 as the night manager of the Student Center and quickly moved into the position of assistant director of Student Billing Services in 1984. By 1986, he was again promoted, this time to assistant director of the Student Center.
" My years spent in Student Affairs provided a basis to better understand what is essential to this institution, our students," Allen said.

In 1992, after nine years in the Student Affairs division, Allen assumed the newly created position of affirmative action director, which he held for nine years before becoming assistant vice president.

Allen continues to be very involved in the local community. He has been on the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Planning Committee since 1985 and is serving on the UK College of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service Civil Rights Committee and Diversity Task Force, the UK Committee to Name University Buildings, and the UK Equal Opportunity Panel. He also serves on the 2003-2006 Strategic Plan Business Subcommittee.

In addition, Allen was on the Wilderness Road Girl Scouts Council Board of Directors, was chair of the UK Cultural Diversity Programs Committee and held other university, state and national appointments. One of his proudest accomplishments was being a member of the Leadership Kentucky Class of 2000.

Allen earned his bachelor's degree in business administration (marketing, management and finance) from UK in 1976.

He and his wife, Rhonda, who works in the College of Medicine, have one son, Ryan, and one daughter, Myah.
