May 7, 2003 (Lexington, Ky.) -- Donna Boyd, artistic director of Musick’s Company, the performing ensemble of Lexington’s Center for Old Music in the New World, has been selected as the University of Kentucky College of Fine Arts Distinguished Alumna of the Year.

Boyd earned a Master of Music in applied voice at UK in 1970. She graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music. From 1973 to 1974 and from 1983 through 1987, she taught on the adjunct voice faculty at UK.

She co-founded Musica Nova, Lexington’s first professional early music ensemble, in 1973 and the Center for Old Music in the New World Inc. in 1977. Her work involves research, editing and arranging music from the 12th through 18th centuries, recruiting performers, and coaching performers in early music styles.

Robert Shay, dean of the UK College of Fine Arts, praised Boyd as a tireless champion of early music through her educational outreach. “Through Ms. Boyd’s vision, the past has been animated in the present, old relics have been rendered relevant, and the dust has been shaken off great historical treasures,” Shay said.

Boyd was selected by the College’s Advisory Council. She will be honored with a dinner Friday, May 9, at Holly Hill Inn, and the Distinguished Alumna Award will be presented to her at the college’s recognition ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 10.
