Lexington-based LevTech Will Tour Nation Demonstrating Its Magnetic Levitation Production System for Biotech Products

LevTech uses superconductors cooled to -180 degrees Fahrenheit to create a magnetic field. The magnetic field then spins a disposable levitating agitating device sealed inside a hermetically sealed polyethylene pouch, thus allowing the mixing to occur in a sterile environment. The pouches and agitating device are available in standard and custom sizes up to 200 liters.

 

May 8, 2003 (Lexington, Ky.) -- LevTech Inc., a Lexington, Ky.-based company, will embark on a nationwide tour in early May to demonstrate its magnetic-levitation production equipment for blending ingredients of pharmaceutical and biotechnology products in sterile environments. The company has built its prototypes and actual production machinery at the University of Kentucky’s Advanced Science and Technology Commercialization Center (ASTeCC).

The technology is now being marketed to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies as a way to mix liquids while eliminating potential contamination resulting from traditional production methods.

The technology was developed by Alex Terentiev, a physicist who left the UK faculty in 2000 to start a company in ASTeCC. Philip Mantey is the company’s CEO and president.

LevTech is one of six companies participating in C-Flex’s “Integrated Solutions for Biopharmaceutical Fluid Handling Summer Tour” that begins at Research Triangle Park in North Carolina on May 9 and will visit 14 other cities in the United States and two Canadian cities this summer.
