LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 3, 2003) -- The University of Kentucky Percussion Ensemble and Steel Band, under the direction of James Campbell, will present its fall concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, in the Concert Hall at the Singletary Center for the Arts. The performance is free and open to the public.

During the concert, the UK Steel Band will dedicate its new set of Caribbean steel drums, obtained through a research equipment grant of $40,000 from the UK Office of the Executive Vice President for Research.

Featured performers, Michael Aukofer and Robert Parks, take center stage in a new work, "The Creation (A Sonic Manifestation)," by Alaska composer Cayenna Ponchione. Aukofer and Parks, graduate students in the UK School of Music, are featured marimba soloists in this work that entertains the concept of the "Big Bang" theory and the perception of matter as vibration. "The Creation" won the 2003 Percussive Arts Society Percussion Ensemble Composition Contest.

The concert also includes a new composition from Aukofer, "Fantasy on the Plains,” in which the composer uses percussion instruments to express his admiration for the beauty and variety of the Midwestern landscape.
