LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 26, 2003) -- The University of Kentucky Student Volunteer Center has created several opportunities for students, faculty and staff to improve the holiday season for less fortunate Lexington area residents.

The first activity is "Bring Back Your Leftovers," a collection drive to benefit the Lexington YWCA Spouse Abuse Center. The center needs bath towels, feminine supplies, laundry detergent, underwear and bras, date books, washcloths, toothbrushes, pillows, socks, bus tokens, bedspreads, alarm clocks, baby supplies and other personal hygiene items.

The drive also seeks nonviolent toys, stuffed animals, sports equipment, clothing, coloring books, tub toys, coats and jackets and other items for children.

Collection points for Bring Back Your Leftovers will be at UK sorority and fraternity houses, residence halls, the College of Law Building, White Hall Classroom Building, Patterson Office Tower, UK Student Center, the UK Chandler Medical Center and other sites on campus.

As the end of the fall semester nears, the Student Volunteer Center also plans a "Feed the Hungry Food Drive," encouraging students to donate food they've kept in their residence hall rooms to support God's Pantry Food Bank.

More information about volunteer opportunities during the holiday season and after is online at the Student Volunteer Center's Web site.
