LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 7, 2003) -- National Alcohol Awareness Week will be observed at the University of Kentucky through Oct. 10 with a series of programs and events on campus.

During the week, students can participate in a variety of events, all designed to reinforce personal responsibility and respect for current state laws and school policies regarding the consumption of alcohol beverages.

UK’s Alcohol and Health Education Office along with The CAUSE – UK’s College Alcohol Use Student Educators – will sponsor events throughout the week, including free food giveaways. The highlight during the week will be “Reality Check” held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 8 on Rose Street, across from the Chemistry/Physics Building. During this event, students put on “fatal vision goggles,” which impair vision in ways similar to alcohol. UK Police will administer drunkenness tests, such as having the “suspects” walk a straight line.

Throughout the academic year at UK students can attend lectures, sporting events and recreational activities – such as the annual street parties and Midnight Finals Crunch Brunch – all 100 percent alcohol free. These events are proof that college students can have a good time without drinking alcohol.

Alcohol Awareness Week Schedule:

Tuesday, Oct. 7, 11 a.m.: Free lunch outside the White Hall Classroom Building

Wednesday, Oct. 8, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.: “Reality Check” on Rose Street, across from the Chemistry/Physics Building.

Thursday, Oct. 9, 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.: Mocktails at the Commons.
