LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 13, 2003) -- Hundreds of teachers from all over Kentucky will gather at the University of Kentucky Oct. 18-21 for the 51st Kentucky Music Teachers State Conference.

The conference is being hosted by the School of Music, UK College of Fine Arts, and several concerts are planned during the event that are free and open to the public.

The event begins Saturday, Oct. 18, with several competitions of young artists, junior high school performers, young artist ensembles, woodwinds groups, and voice competitions at various locations on the UK campus.

The Keyboard Competition’s Winners Recital will be at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Singletary Center for the Arts. The Chamber Music: Instrumental and Vocal Competition Winners Recital is slated at 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, in the Niles Gallery of the Lucille Caudill Little Fine Arts Library, adjacent to the UK College of Fine Arts Building.

At 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, a commissioned Composers Concert will be presented in the Recital Hall of the Singletary Center for the Arts on Rose Street at Euclid Avenue. The concert pieces performed at this event were commissioned by the Kentucky Music Teachers Association to be entered in national competitions.

At 2:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 20, UK School of Music professors Alan Hersh and Benjamin Karp will perform selected Beethoven works for cello and piano in the Niles Gallery. At 8 p.m. Monday, Irina Voro, assistant professor of music, will give a piano concert in the Recital Hall, Singletary Center for the Arts.

The conference ends with the 29th Annual All-State Ensemble Concert with Susan Ogilvy conducting at noon Tuesday, Oct. 21, in the UK Singletary Center for the Arts.
