LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 20, 2003) -- University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center officials announced today that its physicians and hospitals will no longer be participating providers with United Healthcare effective Dec. 1, 2003.

According to Frank Butler, vice president for Medical Center Operations, UK officials over the last several months have been unable to reach an agreement with United Healthcare in contract renegotiations.

“The University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center has made every effort to reach an agreement with United Healthcare,” said Butler. “We are committed to provide the highest quality of care to our patients at a fair price; at this point we are unable to agree with United on an overall pricing approach for payment. We regret that we are unable to continue our contractual relationship with this insurer and any impact this decision may have on United Healthcare subscribers, but we affirm our commitment to meet the health care needs of Central Kentuckians and those throughout our entire service area.”

Last year, UK Hospital admitted approximately 500 United Healthcare patients, while physicians of UK Chandler Medical Center had about 6,000 outpatient visits from those in Central Kentucky and surrounding regions who have this national health care plan.

“The Medical Center values its relationship with insurance and health care plans,” said Butler. “We believe that through these arrangements, UK physicians and other health professionals are able to provide optimum health care to patients who
deserve the very best. Our mission is to provide excellent care to our patients. Patients are always our first priority.”

UK Chandler Medical Center continues to participate with other insurers, including Aetna, Anthem, Bluegrass Family Health, Cigna, CHA Health, Humana, and others.

Patients with questions about their coverage or continuation of care should contact United Healthcare immediately.
