LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 19, 2004) -- The fall semester at the University of Kentucky soon will be under way. Here are some highlights of events that will take place during the first week of the fall semester.
Friday, Aug. 20: New students begin moving into residence halls
New students who are participating in Kentucky Welcome, UK's welcome and orientation week will begin moving into residence halls at 9 a.m. Students will continue to move in Aug. 20-22. University of Kentucky President Lee T. Todd Jr. and First Lady Patsy Todd will be at the Kirwan-Blanding Complex from 9 to 11 a.m. on Aug. 20 to greet students and their parents.
Saturday, Aug. 21: Legacy Student Reception
The UK Alumni Association welcomes students, whose parents are alumni of the university, and their families for refreshments. The gathering will be held at the Helen G. King Alumni House at the corner of Rose Street and Euclid Avenue from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
Saturday, Aug. 21: Cat Walk
New students and their families will walk together across campus, from 1:30 to 1:55 p.m., to the Opening Convocation where they will be greeted by President Todd, Mrs. Todd, and members of the UK community.
Saturday, Aug. 21: Opening Convocation
Parents, other family members and guests are invited to join students at the official opening of the fall semester by the president. The convocation will be at 2 p.m. in Memorial Coliseum.
Saturday, Aug. 21: Get-to-Know-You Gatherings
Following the Opening Convocation, students and their families will proceed to the Student Center to celebrate the beginning of the school year with President and Mrs. Todd. Sponsored by the UK Parent Association, the Get-to-Know-You Gatherings offer students the opportunity to meet others from their state or region of the country.
Saturday, Aug. 21: Campus Ruckus
Students will gather on Haggin Field to enjoy music, games, a student organizations fair, and the “Great Pizza Taste-Off.” Campus Ruckus is sponsored by the Student Activities Board from 9 p.m. to midnight.
Sunday, Aug. 22: Student Center Spectacular
This event is one of the most anticipated events of Kentucky Welcome each year. Students enjoy food and fun in a carnival like atmosphere. Student Center Spectacular is held in the Student Center from 8 p.m. to midnight.
Monday, Aug. 23: UK FUSION (For Unity and Service In Our Neighborhoods)
Members of the university community will work in small groups to complete service projects throughout Fayette County. Participants meet at 9 a.m. on Haggin Field for registration and transportation to various community agencies. They will return to campus at approximately 3 p.m. President and Mrs. Todd will participate in this event.
Wednesday, Aug. 25: UK classes begin.
